Ungefähr 300km nördlich von unserem Wohnort an der Grenze zu Dänemark liegt das Gebiet Cold Hawaii. Hierbei handelt es sich um ein Bereich in Thy in Dänemark an der Küste zwischen Agger und Hanstholm welches aufgrund seiner Windverhältnisse sich zu einem wahren Surfer Hotspot entwickelt hat. Im Zentrum liegt der kleine Ort Klitmøller, einst ein kleiner Fischerort und nun einer der bekanntesten Surfergebiete in Europa und außerdem ein Austragungsort der PWA World Windsurfing Tour.
Im Zeitraum vom 10. bis 26. September finden auch die Cold Hawaii Games statt, ein Wettbewerb mit verschiedenen Disziplinen in Surfen aber auch anderem Sportarten wie Wake- und Skateboarding. Grund genug um an ein Freitag Nachmittag die 3.5 Stunden Fahrt Richtung Norden zu unternehmen um am Wochenende tolle Fotos vom Wettbewerb zu machen und selbst ein wenig zu Surfen (jedenfalls ein Teil von uns 🙂 ).
Wer Dänemark kennt, weiß das selbst die Anfahrt schon ein tolles Erlebnis sein kann und sobald man die Autobahn und Herning verlassen hat, fährt man durch ein tolles Naturgebiet mit dem Limfjord und dem Thy Nationalpark. Hier konnten wir schon die ersten schönen Fotos einfangen.
Leider hatten wir windtechnisch nicht so viel Glück und das Meer war recht ruhig, so das wir am Samstag Vormittag uns erst einmal den Strand von Klitmøller angeschaut haben. Trotz der Wetterverhältnisse war viel am Strand und im Wasser los, so das wir schon ein paar tolle Fotos einfangen konnten.
Nach einer Stärkung im Café mit Pfannkuchen holten wir dann auch die Surfbretter und los ging es mit Neoprenanzug in die Nordsee.
Pünktlich lockerten die Wolken etwas auf und ab und an wurden wir nun auch mit ein paar Sonnenstrahlen belohnt. Die Surfer hatten auf alle Fälle ihren Spaß und es entstanden wirklich tolle Fotos. Dabei kamen unsere Canon Teleobjektive 70-300mm wie auch das 500mm zum Einsatz, dafür gibt es ja nicht immer so viele Gelegenheiten.
Nach den Surfen ging es erst einmal für die “Sportler” unter die Warme Dusche, bevor wir weiter zum Thy Cablepark in Thisted gefahren sind. Hier sollte am späten Nachmittag das Finale der Herren im Wakeboarding Contest stattfinden und zusätzlich auch noch ein Freestyle Wettbewerb. Hier versprachen wir uns weitere tolle aktionsreiche Fotos und sollten nicht enttäuscht werden. Folgend unsere Auswahl der Bilder.
An diesem Wochenende konnten wir wirklich tolle Szenen mit der Kamera einfangen und hatten eine Menge Spaß. Sicherlich bietet sich das Gebiet für eine Wiederholung an und vielleicht gibt es dann auch etwas größere Wellen. Wir freuen uns auf Eure Feedback zu den Bildern und vielleicht habt Ihr auch weitere Empfehlungen für Surfgebiete? Vor ein paar Jahren waren wir auch in Newquay, Cornwall und standen dort das erste mal auf einem Surfboard.
About 300km north of our home town at the border to Denmark you find an area called Cold Hawaii. This is an area in Thy, Denmark on the coast between Agger and Hanstholm which has developed into a real surfer hotspot due to its wind conditions. In the center is the small town of Klitmøller, once a small fishing village and now one of the most famous surfing areas in Europe and also a venue for the PWA World Windsurfing Tour.
From September 10th to 26th the area also hosts the Cold Hawaii Games, a competition with different disciplines in surfing as well as other sports such as wake and skateboarding. Reason enough for us to make the 3.5 hour drive north on a Friday afternoon hopping to catch some great photos of the competition and to surf a little ourself (at least a part of us :-)).
Anyone who knows Denmark knows that even the journey itselfs can be a great experience and as soon as you have left the motorway and Herning, you drive through a great nature area with the Limfjord and the Thy National Park. Here we were able to capture the first beautiful photos.
Unfortunately we didn’t have so much luck in terms of wind and the sea was quite calm. So on Saturday morning we first had a walk at the beach of Klitmøller. Despite the weather conditions, there was a lot going on on the beach and in the water, so that we were able to capture some nice photos.
After a pancake refreshment in a small café, we got the surfboards and wetsuits and off we went into the North Sea.
Punctually the clouds loosened up a bit, so we now and then were rewarded with a few rays of sunshine. The surfers definitely had their fun and the photos got really great. Our Canon telephoto lenses 70-300mm as well as the 500mm were used, there are not always that many opportunities for that.
After surfing, the “athletes” took a warm shower before we went on to the Thy Cablepark in Thisted. The men’s final in the wakeboarding contest was supposed to take place here in the late afternoon, as well as a freestyle competition. Here we promised ourselves more great action-packed photos and should not be disappointed, as you see from our selection of pictures above.
This weekend we were able to capture really great scenes with the camera and we had a lot of fun. Certainly the area is ideal for a repetition and maybe there will be bigger waves then. A few years ago we visited in Newquay, Cornwall, where we tried out surfing for the first time.
