Mitten in Schleswig Holstein, gibt es ein ehemaliges Nuklear Waffen Lager des Special Ammunition Storage (Sondermunitionslager) der USA (ein ausführlicher Bericht und tolle Bilder aus der aktiven Zeit kann über diesen Link aufgerufen werden). Während der Zeit des Kalten Krieges waren hier, etwas abseits in einem Waldgebiet bei Kellinghusen, nukleare Sprengköpfe gelagert. Aufgegeben wurde das Lager bereits 1992 und ist inzwischen frei zugänglich. Bis vor kurzem standen dort, neben den eigentlichen Lagerhallen, noch einige Gebäude und ein Wachturm. Leider waren diese bei unserem Besuch inzwischen nicht mehr vorhanden, so das wir “nur” noch die Lagerhallen und das Tunnelsystem erkunden konnten. Es sind ca. 20 bis 30 Minuten Fußmarsch notwendig um in das Lager zu kommen, denn das Gebiet liegt inmitten eines Waldes.
Die Lagerhallen sind stark bewachsen und sehen wie kleine Hügel aus, zusätzlich erobert die Natur natürlich auch sein Gebiet zurück und in den Tunnelsystemen wachsen zum Teil schon Bäume rein. Das obligatorische Graffiti darf natürlich auch nicht fehlen.

In the middle of Schleswig-Holstein, you’ll find a former nuclear weapons warehouse of the Special Ammunition Storage (SAS) of the US. During the Cold War, nuclear warheads were stored here, a little out of the way in a wooded area near Kellinghusen (a detailed report and great pictures from the active time can be accessed via this link). The camp was abandoned in 1992 and is now freely accessible. Until recently, there were a few buildings and a watchtower next to the actual warehouse. Unfortunately these were demolished earlier in this year, so that we could “only” explore the warehouses and the tunnel system. A 20 to 30 minutes walk is necessary to reach the camp, this due to the area beeing in the middle of a forest.
The warehouses are heavily overgrown and look like small hills. In addition, of course, nature is also reclaiming its territory and some trees are already growing into the tunnel system. The obligatory graffiti should of course not be missing.
